A Hectic Day in NYC

After almost no sleep Tim and I woke up and got ready to catch the train to the Staten Island Ferry so that we could see NYC from afar and also sneak in a peek of the Statue of Liberty. The statue was still closed because of all the damage that occurred during the most recent hurricane, so we were not able to go inside of her, but the ferry ride gave us a good enough view 🙂

statue of liberty

The weather was perfect so we were lucky enough to be able to take clear pictures of the statue and NYC. When we got to Stanen Island, we had to wait half an hour before the next ferry was going to leave so grabbed a bite to eat and enjoyed the sunshine.

On our return we took in the beauty of NYC, a mass jungle of cement.

nyc

Once we were back on solid ground again we waited at the station for Dan and then headed to our next New York experience…

We had heard from Ivan and Jennifer about a fun game you can play called ‘Accomplice‘ it is like a big scavenger hunt, which they play in New York, London and a few other places around the world.

You basically receive a voice message telling you a location to meet and that is it. I don’t want to ruin it, so won’t say too much, but basically we had to meet at a black anchor and then a man told us he has something for us. We were given items and a map and we needed to go see certain people, drop off items, work out the clues and run around downtown New York. It is a great way to see China Town, Little Italy, Brooklyn Bridge, a lot of the downtown attractions and is so much fun. The game goes for about 2.5-3 hours, you are in groups no larger than 10 people and receive beverages and canapes along the way. We loved it and will definitely do it again!

By the time Accomplice had finished we were getting hungry so went to a Chinese stall that was near the Manhattan Bridge and bought fried rice – was so cheap! Thailand prices 😀

We then thought we would tick off the Brooklyn Bridge seeing as it was right there so walked across the Manhattan Bridge and back across the Brooklyn Bridge. We didn’t realise how much walking that would entail and after 2.5 hours of walking for Accomplice we were pretty pooped.

After we’d returned to Manhattan we caught the train back to Dan’s and had a couple hour nap to rejuvenate our batteries before we got ready to venture out again and see New York at night through the eye of the Empire State Building.

The view was amazing, unfortunately our camera started playing up so we couldn’t take as many photos as we had hoped, but managed to snap this one.

Go the Yankee’s!!

Today we woke well and truly refreshed after having 12 hours sleep. When we got up it was almost lunch time, so we thought we would tick off something else from our wishlist, a picnic in Central Park.

central park

Before heading out, we had a quick look online and saw that there were baseball tickets going cheap for tonights game – NY Yankees vs Boston Red Socks. Believe it or not a baseball match was quite high on the wishlist so we bought 2 tickets for tonight’s 7PM game.

We then went to the local supermarket and bought some chicken, salads, salami, cheese, jam doughnuts, water and milk. We walked until we found a nice place to set up and enjoyed a delicious meal with a beautiful view.

Central Park was stunning, Tim even made a friend along the walk.

squirrel

We spent a good couple of hours walking around, venturing in the castle, watching the turtles and frogs swimming in the ponds and the squirrels chasing each other up and down the trees. There was so much going on, we just loved it.

Tim really wanted to visit FAO Schwartz as a couple of his favourite movies were shot there. When we walked in we were blown away with all the colour, toys and lollies that they had. It really was a child’s heaven!!

lollies

Our excitement tripled when saw that the Big Piano and Zoltar from the Tom Hanks movie ‘Big’ were there. We lined up behind the children and waited for our go on both.

There were even teddy bears taller than me!

The time was flying and before we knew it, it was time to start thinking about heading towards Yankee Stadium to watch our first baseball game 🙂

We said goodbye to Dan and caught the Bronx bound train to Yankee Stadium, which took about 20 minutes.

yankee

yankee stadium

when we arrived the stadium was packed! We made our way inside, grabbed some good old baseball food of hot-dogs and water then found our seats and enjoyed the atmosphere. Everyone was really getting into the game, it was like seeing a footie match back home but with the slow low scoring game like soccer.

baseball pitch

The game went for about 3 hours in total with a final score of 4-2 to the Yankee’s. Halfway through the game we all had to stand up and sing a song dedicated to the American soldiers, we didn’t know the words but thought it was a nice gesture. The rules of baseball were quite easy to pick up, we were seated next to two American’s who explained everything we needed to know.

After the game the stadium cleared out very quickly, we had to wait about 10 minutes for the next empty train back to Manhattan, which wasn’t bad.

IMG_7407

On the way home we picked up a couple beers, bought gyros on rice from a local street vendor – delicious – and went back to Dan’s where we all talked and shared photos until 2:30AM.

From Sin City to the Big Apple

After going to Vegas for 4 days and staying for a little over two months we thought it was definitely time to pack our suitcases, say goodbye to our new Vegas friends and leave Sin City.

We booked a red eye flight to New York, which meant we needed to be at the airport for around 10:30PM. We were both feeling tired and didn’t like the idea of losing 3 hours as that meant we could only get 4 hours shut eye before we would need to be wide awake to take in the business and beauty of New York City.

As soon as the plane had taken off and we’d said our goodbye’s I drifted off into a deep sleep, Tim unfortunately couldn’t sleep so stayed up watching movies.

bye vegas

When we were nearing landing we were greeted with a beautiful sunrise to welcome us to New York City.

sunrise

Once we had landed we collected our luggage and waited for our friend who kindly said we could crash at his for the 3 days we were here.

Once we met up with Dan we caught 3 trains to get from JFK to his and then sat around for a couple of hours catching up, before our stomachs started to rumble and we ventured out for food.

Dan took us to a sandwich place called Carnegie Deli and he wasn’t kidding when he said the they were famous for their big sandwiches!!

one big blt

There must have been a whole pig in between two slices of bread, needless to say I could not finish this and only just mange 3/4 of one.

meat

Tim’s sandwich of meaty goodness was just…meat.

After we waddled down the streets of New York until we entered the busy quarters of Time Square.

time square day

As we only had three days in New York we really wanted to make the most of our time here and tick off as much of our ‘wishlist’ as possible. One of the things we thought we should do whilst in New York was to see a Broadway show. The is a discounted ticket booth in Time Square that had the biggest line I had ever seen. We decided a Broadway show was something we really wanted to do, so lined up for 45 minutes to get 2x tickets to see Annie.

annie musical

We were both excited and happy that there were tickets still available by the time we made it to the counter. We paid $51 each and were seated 20 rows back from the stage smack bang in the middle.

The show didn’t start until 7PM so we thought we would walk around town, take in Time Square and tick off the beautiful Grand Central Station.

grand central

IMG_7196

We then found a quiet place to rest our bodies for an hour as we were starting to fade quickly – poor Tim had been up for nearly 35 hours straight now!

At 6PM we said goodbye to Dan and headed back towards Annie so we could be seated and relax for a couple of hours.

annie seats

Annie was amazing!! Was so very similar to the movie and the acting and singing was great. Tim even enjoyed himself 😉 Jane Lynch made a great Miss Hannigan and the sets and costume were so great. Highly recommend 🙂

The show finished around 9:30Pm, so we decided to grab a New York pizza slice and walk the 50 blocks back to Dan’s place and catch up on some much needed sleep.

The Highlights of Vegas

Vegas…there is so much I could write about this place, pool parties, erotic poetry, David Copperfield, The Strip, unique teppanyaki, Craps, casinos, pop up chapel, celebrities, mobsters, suspected bobcat, bottle service, hypnosis….but maybe I should just start at the beginning.

Tim and I had planned to stay 4 nights in Vegas. two on the strip and two couch surfing with a couple named Ivan and Jennifer. Well that didn’t turn out the way we had planned….

Coming to Vegas and staying for 4 nights turned into staying for 65 nights. Couch surfing for 2 nights turned into house sitting for 2 months, hosts turned into lifelong friends.

So much happened whilst we were Vegas, some things people wouldn’t believe if we told them.

Ivan and Jennifer’s friend and next door neighbour Michael was going overseas for a little while. He asked if we could please look after his house and feed his cat whilst he was away. We had no plans, Michael seemed nice, so did Ivan and Jennifer, so we said yes. And let me say the 2 months we spent in Vegas are definitely one of the highlights of our trip.

How we lasted 2 months in Vegas is a common question we get asked, but how couldn’t you? There is so much to see and do, especially when you have locals as friends 🙂

Ever thought it would be cool to get married in Vegas? Well Tim and I really wanted to, Ivan found out that the Cosmopolitan’s Pop up Chapel was open and they were allowing 10 couple to get married for free as a promotion. All four of us put our names down.

There were 10 couples, some in wedding dresses, some in fancy dress and others in normal clothes. There was even a gay couple who brought their dog.

Musashi Japanese Steakhouse – Unique Teppanyaki

If you enjoy Teppanyaki, an entertaining show, a great feed, don’t get offended easily and aren’t afraid or something a little different, then I cannot recommend Musashi highly enough. Tiger is the chef you want, he will have you in stitches with the funny comments he makes and toys he uses. The food is amazing and for what you pay is reasonable as it is not just a meal, but also a show. Here are a couple of snapshots from our first time there…

Interesting way to pour the oil...

Interesting way to pour the oil…

Surprise!

Surprise!

We had so much fun here that we went back 4 times over the 2 month period, each time slightly different, but always hilarious.

All of us enjoy magic, Michael being good friends with David Copperfield’s manager organised us all free tickets to David Copperfield’s show at the MGM Grand. It was amazing! The seats were great and some of the tricks I am still trying to work out now. The show is well worth watching if you are ever nearby, there isn’t a boring minute and David Copperfield is very interactive with the audience.

Before the David Copperfield Show at MGM Grand

Before the David Copperfield Show at MGM Grand

Ivan and Jennifer heard about a ‘Tweet Up’ Titanic Artifact Exhibition at the Luxor, so we went there one evening for a look around. There were remains of the ship that had been retrieved from the ocean and sets showing how the cabins and different classes looked. Here we met Ivan’s friend Lee, a nice guy from England, the two had met on an overland safari in Africa. The Titanic Artifact Exhibition was free for those attending the ‘Tweet Up’, so we all went along, explored the exhibition and enjoyed free drinks and canapés.

The Titanic Staircase

The Titanic Staircase

There was a promotion on at the nightclub called The Act, it was an ‘End of the World’ themed event. Jennifer had won bottle service for this event so we all went along and enjoyed an hour of open bar, a bottle of vodka, sweets and treats, good music and face painting.

Face Paint and Bottle Service

Think this picture sums up the amount of fun we are having 🙂

The Mob Museum is worth a look if you are interested in the history of the Las Vegas mobsters.

When we went there was a free event for locals to promote their whisky and because Al Capone’s niece was giving a speech about the history of Al Capone. The four of us decided to go along and listen to the speech, explore the museum and enjoy the complimentary whisky, cocktails and food for their guests. The museum was a lot of fun, with lots of hands on and interactive things to look at.

Another highlight and a must to do when you are in Vegas is to experience a Vegas pool party. These parties are out of control, the one we attended at Encore beach club was featuring Avichii and there would easily have been more than a thousand people there. The atmosphere was awesome! We were lucky to have bottle service here too, thanks to Lee. So we all enjoyed the sun, pool, vodka and music throughout the day (some the vodka just a little too much 😉 ).

I

Another fun pool party was at Wet Republic when Steve Aoki was playing. Steve Aoki would spray bottles of champagne over the audience, throw cakes into peoples faces, crowd surf and throw out free singlets.

I won’t use names, but Michael introduced us a to a really nice guy who ended up having so many surprises up his sleeve. Starting with owning the Eleanor car from Gone in 60 Seconds, signed by Nicholas Cage – Tim enjoyed checking out this beast.

To having secret rooms in his house, like what you see in a James Bond movie..move a poster here, press a button there, that kind of thing. Inside the first secret door was the Batman get up and behind that a secret room filled with so many awesome movie props and accessories from the Golden Gun to Dexter’s blood slides. We had so much fun exploring his house, he really was the nicest guy.

These are just a handful of the highlights from our stay in Vegas, if you are planning on visiting you will not be disappointed. There is so much to see and do, everyone’s in great spirits and there is always someone up to party 🙂

The house we house sat  for in Las Vegas was amazing!

It is 4 stories with a swimming pool, spa, an awesome view of the Vegas strip from the top floor, the friendliest cat (that we managed to keep alive 😉 ) and the most welcoming and friendly neighbours.

Grand Canyon

Grand Canyon was on our must see list, so we hired a car from Avis car rentals and went halves in the cost with the fellow couch surfing guys Michael and Julie.

It was an early start as we wanted to get to the canyon before the sun set, so as soon as all of the paperwork was sorted out we headed towards Arizona.

All set to go

All set to go

At the border of Las Vegas and Arizona is the Hoover Dam, one of America’s big engineering feats. The Hoover Dam powers a lot of Las Vegas energy and was good to see.

We had a look around, took some happy snaps, stretched our legs and then set off again as we still had a few hours of driving left.

Standing in two places at once ;)

Standing in two places at once 😉

Arrived at the canyon about an hour before sunset; we were all very unprepared for the cold weather, wearing shorts and singlets as it was so hot when we left Vegas.

The sheer size and beauty of the canyon was amazing and we all watched the sunset and took some photos before we drove back towards the nearest motel where we would stay tonight.

Julie worked her magic and got a bargain price for the night at the ‘Grand Canyon Motel’, we all shared a room that had 2 double beds and a bathroom. Ordering pasta from the motel restaurant and buying a few beers/wine we had a reasonably early night as it was going to be a long day tomorrow.

Getting up early we got ready, packed up the car, checked out, and grabbed a McDonald’s breakfast which happened to be right next to the Grand Canyon!

When we arrived at the entrance of the Grand Canyon we couldn’t believe how long the lineup was. Cars were queuing from miles back. Luckily we had bought a pass last night to enter the park, which meant we could drive in the express lane, this made the waiting time not too bad.

We made it :)

We made it 🙂

Looking at the park map, we decided on a route that was away from the touristy areas and let us see as many lookouts as we could get to.

Spending a good 5 hours at the canyon, we decided it was time to head back if we wanted to make it back to Vegas tonight.

On the way back we stopped in an awesome diner where you sit in car booths, the toilets were decorated with car parts and there were car shells embedded into the walls.

The toilet door

The toilet door

Here we shared a rack of ribs and a chicken.

We arrived back in Vegas at 10PM, took a sneaky picture at the ‘Welcome to Las Vegas’ sign and then headed back to where we were staying.

We did this trip in a super whirlwind as we were short on time. There are lots of hikes that you can do here, camping spots and helicopter rides, for those staying a few days.

We were happy with what we did, the Grand Canyon is definitely a must see if you are ever nearby.

Sin City!

We had decided the cheapest and easiest way to get from Santa Monica to Las Vegas would be via car sharing. Looking online we found a young guy named James heading to Vegas exactly when we needed to go. We would be leaving tomorrow, so we booked 2 nights at a hotel on the strip for the experience and arranged some couch surfing for in a few days time.

Saying goodbye to our lovely host Newsha, we met with James around 12ish and headed northbound to Vegas.

LA  to Las Vegas takes a good few hours by car, but because James was a really easy guy to make conversation with the time flew. James asked if we had experienced an In and Out burger yet. When we said no, he insisted the next stop must be an In and Out. This particular burger joint, which allows you to select how you would like your burgers to be made. I opted for the protein burger, which is a patty, cheese and salad wrapped in lettuce leaves, instead of a bun. It was really nice.

When we arrived into Vegas, I was blown away by all of the lights. It was so cool to see such a busy city literally in the middle of the desert. James dropped us at our hotel for the next 2 nights, The Quad, we said our thank yous, gave him some money towards petrol and parted ways.

After checking in we dropped off our luggage and got ready to explore the city.

The next day we went to a timeshare presentation that lasted 2 hours, we enjoyed complimentary hot drinks and sandwiches and listened to people try to sell us timeshare. Why you might ask, well it gave us greatly reduced tickets to see the Cirque du Soleil show ‘O’, the water acrobatic show that we really wanted to see whilst we were in Vegas.

The show was for tonight, so after the timeshare presentation we made our way to the Bellagio Casino.

Fantastic Show

‘O’ was fantastic, highly recommend if you are interested in the Cirque du Soleil shows.

The next morning we were being picked up by our Vegas hosts Ivan and Jennifer. Ivan was into magic and hypnosis, a big reason why we sent them a request as Tim really enjoys magic and would love to be hypnotized.

When they collected us we headed back to their place, which wasn’t far from the strip at all and couldn’t get over how awesome the inside of their house was.

Ivan and Jennifer

Ivan and Jennifer

There was decorative graffiti everywhere, the roof looked like that of a warehouse, the kitchen was decorated to look like Super Mario – the exhaust fan painted green to look like one of the tubes Marion goes down – and there was funky furniture and decorations everywhere. Was super cool.

That night Ivan and Jennifer took us out to the strip to catch up with 2 more of their couch surfers who had decided to spend two nights on the strip and to watch a local show called ‘The Balloon Man’, let’s just say it was different 🙂 Jennifer was participating this week, so was fun to watch.

The other couch surfers, Julie and Michael, were really nice too. We decided to do a road trip to The Grand Canyon with them, you can read that blog post here.

The next day we were planning on saying our farewells to Ivan and Jennifer, so the 6 of us and Ivan and Jen’s neighbour Michael went to the ‘Black Bear Diner’ for a true American feasts. The servings were huge!

Universal Studios

Through a friend we managed to book discounted tickets to Universal Studios Hollywood, which was great. We arrived literally as the doors were opening and managed to get on all of the big popular rides before there were any lines.

This was by far the best ride here – The Transformers ride is a 3D simulation ride, which takes you from room to room, plays with your senses and makes your tummy fall. We even got to meet Optimus Prime!

The other great rides was the Mummy roller coaster and the Simpson’s simulation ride. Once we had riden until our hearts were content  it was time to find Marty Mcfly and the famous Delorean.

‘Water World’ was the live performance being shown whilst we were there. I enjoyed it, definitely worth watching.

The show went for around 30 minutes, be careful where you sit though as the first three rows are soak zones, the jet skis enjoy to make a splash!

For lunch we went to Flintstones Cafe and ate a HUGE turkey leg, was a monster to eat.

Feeling full from lunch we decided to do the Studio Tour, the tour went for around and hour and was excellent. You get taken through flooding subways, Wisteria Lane, Pyscho’s motel, Jaw’s territory, plane crash, Mummy tunnel, King Kong and so many other cool sets from well known movies and TV shows.

Beautiful Santa Monica

After getting to the airport in Tokyo 5 hours early we still almost didn’t make our flight! Our exit ticket out of the USA exceeded the allowed 90 days, meaning that with half an hour to spare we had to pay $25 to switch our flight dates. Unnecessary stress, but all was good in the end and we made our flight and landed safely into Los Angeles.

We were even welcomed by Mr Obama.

welcome

Once we arrived and had collected our luggage we headed to the airport bus terminal as we read that you can catch a bus from LAX to Downtown LA for $1. This is indeed true, we couldn’t believe that it only cost $1 to travel just under an hour on the bus.

We had arranged to stay with a lady in Santa Monica. Newsha finished work later in the evening so we made our way to Santa Monica and grabbed a bite to eat. At 7:30pm we met Newsha, a friendly lady who made us feel really welcome, we all instantly clicked. For dinner we had vegetables, cheese, meats and wine and stayed up until late into the night talking about this, that and everything.

newsha

Tim really wanted to visit Santa Monica because of the travelling rings, so we spent an entire day playing on the rings, trying out slack lines, climbing ropes and enjoying the sunshine.

You’re Never too Old for Disney

Disney Sea! I have absolutely loved Disney since I was a little girl so was really excited to go to the second Disneyland built in Japan. We were interested to read that both Tokyo Disney and Disney Sea are the only two parks that are not owned by The Walt Disney Company. A Japanese company have liscences from the Walt Disney Company which allows them to use Disney characters and themes. One thing we noticed was that they only had Mickey Mouse, Goofy, Mini Mouse, Donald Duck and Daisy characters walking around. Not saying they never have other characters, but when we were there they were the only ones we saw.

It is very easy to get to Disney Sea, we caught the train to Disneyland Resort and then you have the option to either catch the monorail or walk. We decided to walk as it was only about 15 minutes.

We thought coming here midweek would make the theme park less busy, but we were wrong! There were so many people, the record line that we saw was 180 minutes for one ride!

We pre-booked our tickets at a Disney store yesterday, so walked straight in. We were handed a map, but as it was all in Japanese I had to exchange it for an English one.

leading the way

We were greeted with the Disney band, a nice parade where the characters and musicians parade around the grounds.

Tim's favourite character

mickey

Mickey’s line was really long, we waited until later in the night when we only had to wait 30 mins. We only got to meet the two characters as Mini Mouse’s line was really long as well and by the time we had met Mickey, Mini had gone home.

dinner

Eating the ever so healthy theme park food 😉 Chips and a chicken salad baguette. We were surprised to see that the park food wasn’t ridiculously overpriced, the sandwiches and chips was around $10. There were also drink stands and snack stalls with reasonable priced goods.

Disney by nightAerials Lair at night, the building really stood out

Temple of Doom

The Indiana Jones ride had a ridiculous 3 hour wait time, so we decided to ride as single riders as you can skip the line. Tim and I ended up in the same cart anyways, so all was good.

I cannot recommend the Fantasmic Show at 8pm enough, it was fantastic. Especially if you are a Disney nut like me. The show lasted around 40 minutes and is filled with singing, dancing, light shows and fireworks.

It was a great day/night. We stayed until close and walked back to catch the train. Overall a really great day 🙂
